Luis Saglie has been hailed as a composer by the international public, professional musicians and the press. He is kept busy with constant commissions from instrumentalists, symphonic and chamber ensembles, universities and artistic centers. He has collaborated as composer with soloists of the Vienna Philharmonic, Radio Orchestra of Vienna, Niederösterreichisches Tonkünstler Orchestra, the Herbert von Karajan Centrum in Vienna, the Theodor Körner Fonds of Austria, Musikwerkstatt Wien, Florisdorfer Chorvereinigung Harmonie, professors at the University of Music in Vienna, the Split Chamber Orchestra in Croatia, the Chilean Ministry of Culture as well as professional soloists in Austria, Germany, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Slovenia, Mexico and the U.S.A.

Mr. Saglie was recently awarded the First Prize at the International Horn Society Composition Contest 2009. His horn repertoire as a whole has been highly praised by major horn professionals and composers such as Jan Jankovic of the Vienna Philharmonic who shares, “Whether through his solo repertoire, chamber works or larger scale compositions with horn, Mr. Saglie is establishing himself as a pioneer of his time, standing side by side with the most respected composers such as W.A. Mozart, G. Mahler, and R. Strauss” and the legendary Peter Damm who expresses, “Luis Saglie achieves to take advantage of the adequate musical possibilities of expression of the horn”. American composer William Kraft comments, “It is obvious from the first measures of your Concierto Fantástico for two horns and orchestra that you are a mature composer”. Also in 2009, he was the selected composer-delegate to represent Chile in the Global Climate Change Music Project during the 2009 United Nations COP meeting in Copenhagen, Denmark. Currently, Luis Saglie is beginning work on his newest commission from pianist Yevgeniy Milyavskiy while scoring an independent feature film and a feature-length documentary.

In 2006, Luis Saglie conducted the premier of his first opera, El día de la liberación (libretto: Santini) in Vienna, Austria to receive outstanding reviews. Heinz Sichrovsky of News Magazine, Austria wrote, “Today, it is a rare thing for opera premiers to be remembered. El día de la liberación by the Chilean composer Luis Saglie was in every way memorable”. The Österreichische Musikzeitschrift, Austria published, “Luis Saglie’s score to El día de la liberación is put together through a brilliant technique lying somewhere between moderate serialism and a free-tonality”. Opera composer Jake Heggie comments, “You have a wonderful gift. There is a real sense of gesture, motion, character, line, architecture and shape in your opera. I love the orchestration and the way you handle the voices”. In 2005, Mr. Saglie was awarded the Theodor Körner-Prize for composition which was presented to him by the Austrian President, Dr. Heinz Fischer. Also that year, he was a featured composer in the ITG Journal (International Trumpet Guild). He received a National Scholarship for Composition from the Federal Chancellery of the Republic of Austria in 2004 and was a featured composer in the International Spanish sender at ORF (Austrian Radio and T elevision) in 2001.

Luis Saglie was born in Oslo Norway on October 4, 1974 and spent his early years in his native Chile. In 1981, his family moved to Los Angeles, California. He was a self-taught composer since the age of nine, leading years later to formal studies in piano and composition at UCLA. In 1996, he moved to Vienna, Austria where he established a twelve year residency. There, he pursued extensive studies in orchestral and opera conducting as well as in composition at both the Hochschule für Musik in Wien (University of Music in Vienna) and the Vienna Conservatory. In the field of composition, Luis Saglie holds a Master of Arts (MA), a Bachelor of Arts (BA) and a Conservatory Diploma. Mr. Saglie has presently established a one year residency in Italy with the goal of producing and launching several concert, theater and film scoring projects.
